IGLCC BOARD OF DIRECTORS WELCOMES ITS NEW CHAIR
A message from Ken Batty, from Lenovo Western Europe

Ken Batty

I am proud and honored to have been elected to chair the Board of the IGLCC. The Chamber is the only truly international business organization with affiliated members, supporting companies and individual members from all around the world. It is the only organization that brings together, from across the globe, LGBT businesses, LGBT employees, LGBT business organizations and companies which wish to publicly support their LGBT employees, customers and suppliers. The Chamber is therefore in a unique position to represent the voices of LGBT businesses.

The Chamber has already established its global credential with the database of LGBT suppliers and the index of LGBT friendly employers - not just focused on one country, or one part of the world, but drawn from every continent. We are now moving to a new phase in the life of the organization as we start to develop further and look at how we can represent our members, and the wider LGBT business community, with other activities.

Over the coming months the Board will be working on the strategy for the IGLCC and how we can ensure that we are able to execute it, and that it actually makes a difference. Global coverage comes with global sized challenges but the Board is ready for those and keen to step up. The Board is keen to hear your views and ideas on what we should be doing. We will be finding better ways to hear the views of members and supporters as part of our development.

My guess is if you have read this far you are a supporter of the IGLCC in some way.   In which case I want to thank you for your support and hope that we can rely on you in the future.

Best wishes

Ken Batty

2010 INDEX SEMINAR
LGBT equality in business at the center stage in London

BT

This past September, over 30 LGBT Inclusion and Diversity leaders from 16 major international corporations joined the IGLCC in London, England to share their expertise and to offer a close insight into today’s best LGBT practices and policies at their respective corporations.

The event was hosted by BT Group at BT Tower in the center of London. The IGLCC extends its gratitude to Mr. Ian Livingston, CEO of BT for his warm welcome at the beginning of the Seminar and for his enduring commitment to LGBT equality.

We thank as well Mr. Dennis Gissing, Head of People Practice and Miss Anne Heal, Managing Director, Strategy along with the Kaleidoscope group and all BT people, for their remarkable support and assistance with the organization of the event. We share with them in the great success of the first Index Seminar.

The 16 major international corporations who participated in this historical event are ACCENTURE, ACCOR, BARCLAYS, BRITISH COUNCIL, BT GROUP, CONTINENTAL AIRLINES, CREDIT SUISSE, ERNST & YOUNG, GOOGLE, IBM, KPMG, MICROSOFT, ROYAL DUTCH SHELL, SIMMONS & SIMMONS, TNT and UBS AG.

IGLCC partners ILGA and IGLTA were also in attendance and we thank them as well for their participation and support of the Index.

The one-day seminar saw great potential and desire for implementation of fairer LGBT policies and practices in the workplace. The very interactive morning session, highlighted by examples from several participants showcased the newest trends involving Diversity and Inclusion, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policies and Practices, Supplier Diversity and Marketing and Community Involvement.

The afternoon was dedicated to discussions involving methodology and an overall assessment of the Index survey questions, based on the follow-up with the 2010 Index participants. The process is currently underway with the IGLCC receiving feedback from the Seminar delegates. A document is being produced with the major conclusions of the Seminar and will be shared with all corporate participants in the months to come. A follow-up meeting is also being planned before registrations officially open for the 2011 Index. Furthermore, a Guide of Best LGBT Practices for International Equality in the Workplace will be presented in 2011.

The IGLCC also would like to thank Iliad and its members for hosting a very professional and fruitful closing cocktail reception. We were honored to present Gareth Thomas with the 2010 International Awareness Award and thank him for his very inspiring speech and contribution to LGBT visibility.

Getting on the globalization gravy train

It is concerning that LGBT marketing is viewed in the world almost exclusively as the business of marketing products to gays, lesbians and transsexuals. For some it is concentrated on local gay owned businesses and for others it’s helping big business market into LGBT communities (or, as we like to put it, helping business engage with gay and lesbian people). What is not discussed as rule, is how gay owned businesses market into the straight communities.

There is a reason for this: Many would wonder why it would matter whether a business selling widgets is owned by straight or gay people. And they would have a point. It should not. But it does. All too often! While it is certain in many countries that straight businesses are entirely comfortable dealing with gay customers, it is not clear whether the reverse is true, or the reverse of the reverse, for that matter (are straight businesses or straight people as comfortable buying form gay business, or – the reverse of the reverse – are gay business people entirely comfortable dealing with straight clientele?)

Sure there are some enduring business stereotypes, such as hairdressers and antique dealers, where the “gayness” of the owner becomes a dominant and compelling attribute to customers. But there are myriad gay owned businesses that struggle to survive and somehow do not seem to get the traction, growth, financing and reputation that equivalent straight owned businesses do.

Is this yet another LGBT paranoia, or is this yet another plea for a subsidy or handout? Probably not, but there may be underlying causes rooted in an historic sense of alienation. Many of these businesses are undercapitalized, and entrepreneurs have been reluctant to apply to even the most fundamental capital markets (banks) for debt financing, let alone more complicated and discriminating sources of financing.

Furthermore, organizations that service gay entrepreneurs are focused more on the aforementioned marketing, than on providing fundamental business advice. It is not paranoid to suggest that LGBT business owners who are not schooled in how to raise capital, and may be nervous about how they would be received, might be reluctant to participate in mainstream educational opportunities provided by mainstream companies.

In the US gay entrepreneurs are able to ride the wave of diversity supplier requirements imposed by the federal government, but this is not really the case in other countries (although, as a result of US corporate policies, some US multinationals are applying similar programs throughout their global offices). What we do see in other countries are myriad programs for women entrepreneurs, minority entrepreneurs, aging entrepreneurs, under age entrepreneurs, and so on. But, not for LGBT entrepreneurs!

In the US there is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel – a few (okay one that we can find) capital management companies have seen the potential of investing in LGBT owned business, but one is not enough and is less than one if nobody knows about it or, if they do, knows how to approach them and build a relationship.

Bottom line: there is time for LGBT business organizations to turn off the laser-focus on marketing into the community, and start providing wider business advisory services, lobbying at all level of government to get a piece of the business development pie and help small entrepreneurs grow through developing new markets and building bigger businesses.
