Laurence's Marketing Monthly

Are newspapers dead, and why should we care?

Rumours of the death of newspapers, television and other “old” world media are premature and exaggerated.

Two points stand out in what some see as a decimated newspaper and magazine world: first, readership (as opposed to paid readership), is up; and, more interestingly, paid readership of quality newspapers (New York Times, Guardian, Toronto Star, and others) is up, too. Conversely, paid readership of mid and lower range schlock papers, is down and down dramatically. What is really happening is people are demonstrating a desire to read news off-line, and are prepared to pay for quality. However, there are now so many free alternatives (Metro, for instance, which is a global free distribution, daily newspaper, franchise that originated in Sweden and now has more than 17 million daily readers in 18 countries and 15 languages.) that there is no need for readers to pay for mediocre news. They get it free.

This is worth understanding in relation to the LGBT community. While gays and lesbians are reputed to have been ahead of the curve as it relates to online presence, this does not automatically suggest that they are ahead of the curve in moving away from printed information sources.  Given the opportunity, it is likely that gays and lesbians would read print publications – either quality for which they pay, or mediocrity for which they don’t pay (the traditional gay newspaper paradigm).

The reason for the decline in readership of gay print media lies in availability, not in massive social change. As urban gay ghettos have been giving way to gentrification, it has become increasingly difficult to distribute free gay media effectively. In other words, the publishers and advertisers are, to some extent, forcing gays and lesbians to go online for their news. If they could find a way of effectively distributing print media into gay and lesbian households, there would, it stands to reason, be an interested, motivated audience. This however means that the distribution would have to be free or, heaven forbid, publishers of gay newspapers would have to improve the quality of their publications!

Why should we care? After all, online is as good a way of getting to people as any, isn’t it? Actually, no, it isn’t. Online works well as a sales channel for the distribution of goods and services, but works badly as a means of brand building.  And even as a tactical sales channel its effectiveness is declining as the online advertising environment becomes increasingly cluttered.

It is in the interests of brands that want to build enduring, positive relationships with gay and lesbian customers, to promote an effective print component in the media mix. This means going beyond the basic “cost per eyeball” price comparisons, and accepting that offline eyeballs are more expensive than their myopic, dazed and fuzzy online counterparts. But, if you are in a category where sales cannot be immediately generated by being associated with a naked man or woman, this premium is necessary and will prove a good investment over time.

Of course, maybe there is no category that doesn’t respond to a naked man or woman! But more on that some other time.
