ProsPride

In Sweden, a new professional identity is being created by determination, perseverance and a "pinch" of good old style networking

Two years ago I co-founded an alumni association, being one the first "media engineer" graduates from the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm). Having worked with the alumni I soon started wondering how it come to be that I am not a part of a similar network for GLBTs in Sweden.

My situation as a media technology graduate resembles my situation as a gay professional: I have no professional role models and my identity at work is a balancing of other people's expectations and my integrity. For example, in most business situations it is important to establish trust in a smooth and quickly manner. The people I meet often try to open our discussions with topics that they expect me to automatically relate to. Thinking about this I soon realized that "ProsPride" can help to create a LGBT professional identity, develop our job market and help us find business opportunities through enforcing each other through positive stories, in the same way as it has been done between media engineers.

To get started, I used ning.com to create a free social networking platform. Here all members could put up a picture and introduce their professional profiles. The site is invite-only so that people can present themselves comfortably regardless if they have come out at work or not. This June ProsPride had its first after work in a very nice hotel in Stockholm thanks to one of the member's initiative. Today we are sixty members and continuing our growth.

Through it all, meeting LGBT professionals and counting with the support of organizations like the IGLCC has been a very important tool for the development of ProsPride. I can see through the contacts made in just a few months that there are in fact, professional role models, and that once found, they are willing to share their experiences and help me not only to keep my integrity, but to flourish thanks to it.

If you have an inspiring story to share with us in Sweden, please don't be shy. We would love to hear from you.
